Esmee Mulder has a diverse multi-disciplinary background in engineering (remote sensing analyses, programming, modelling), natural sciences (physical geography, hydrology, environmental sciences) and social sciences (anthropology, international development studies). She applies this expertise in projects related to natural resources management both in agricultural and pastoral areas as well as urban settings. Esmee’s work consists of the integration between technological knowledge (through using for example satellite imagery analyses, GIS data collection and Google Earth Engine) and local knowledge (obtained through for example field verification, interviews, focus groups, and citizen science). She applies this expertise in program management, trainings (communities, practitioners, universities), Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning assessments, and setting up geo-spatial integrated resource management systems. Esmee has a strong passion for Human Centred Design (HCD) and working with creative approaches such as mapathons and Google Earth storytelling, to ensure the voices of the people on the ground are heard and their inputs are integrated throughout programs. Finally, by living in a pastoral community in Northern Tanzania for extended periods, she has grown a strong passion for pastoralism and gained much knowledge on pastoral livelihoods, including drought management strategies, gender roles, and (continuously changing) traditions.
